i blame Hopsin for this
there's something about Ill mind of Hopsin 5 that permanently registered with a very specific type of person. weird small town art kids. the ones who spent way too time decorating the covers of their notebooks. i have no idea why this song specifically became such a universal experience for us, but somehow it did.
i distinctly remember laughing at the lyric, "i honestly feel like grabbing your head and hitting it... matter of fact you don't even deserve a brain, gimme it." it was just so ridiculously aggressive that it wrapped back around to being funny.
when i heard the song again recently i didn't immediately think about high school, i immediately saw an animation.
i pictured a page ripped out of one of those notebooks that slowly turned into a scrapbook. gel pen doodles. gem stickers. magazine clippings. stars and arrows and little flourishes filling every empty space because apparently leaving white space was illegal at 16.
i wanted it to feel like i was arguing with myself. like all the little thoughts bouncing around in your head somehow ended up on paper.
and of course... me hitting myself in the head with a baseball bat.
some songs just permanently live in your visual library. you hear them years later and instead of remembering where you were when you first heard them, you just start storyboarding.
i am so happy with the way that when i hear music or see art now, i feel like i've gotten to the point where i've practiced by design skills so much this summer, that i just immediately have animations and vfx ideas for them.
